“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships” (Michael Jordan)

Learning to work together as a team in gymnastics builds character as well as friendships. It does not matter how big or small the class/team may be, there is always a goal at hand to be achieved. By reaching goals together through teamwork, children are learning valuable life skills such as, hard work, perseverance, and how to support each other.
Preschool:
Preschool students are learning many skills sets as they grow and develop. Even though young children are still progressing and learning basic tasks, they can still learn how to engage in teamwork. For example, preschool students participate in a game at the end of each class. One of the common games played involves the parachute. Each child must lift the parachute at the same time and run underneath it without letting any air out creating a balloon like affect. This fun interactive activity teaches preschool children how to work together as a team to achieve a goal.
Recreational:
For children in recreational classes they are learning teamwork through encouragement towards other classmates. Here at Discover Gymnastics, children are in the same class with the same children for a semester. During the semester, children learn each other’s names and encourage one another during class. These young gymnasts are learning how to make their bodies do new skills they have never done before. By giving each other encouraging words during class, children are learning how to support one another. In a recreational class, a coach might display teamwork through a group incentive. For instance, a coach might tell their class they will have an ice cream party when everyone gets their roundoff back-handspring on the floor without spot. This helps the children encourage one another and work together towards a common goal. This is TEAMWORK.
Team:
Once a child reaches the team level, gymnastics becomes more about repetitions, time and mental strength. The conditioning is harder as the expectations are raised, time spent in the gym increases, and skills become more mentally challenging. Thru conditioning gymnasts are pushed to get physically stronger by consistent repetition and drills. Here at Discover Gymnastics our team athletes do their strength training together repetition by repetition. By doing their conditioning together, team girls build comradery and are learning how to push each other as a team while they get stronger. When one person falls behind the whole group is there to pick them up. The team gymnasts work together and keep one another accountable for the betterment of the team.
