Here at Discover Gymnastics, our recreational program is designed to teach flexibility, strength, coordination and body awareness using gymnastics skills while building positive self-esteem in a relaxed, fun, yet challenging atmosphere.  We believe in developing a successful gymnast both physically and emotionally. Our recreational program is designed to build gymnastics skills through progression. Activities include bars, tumbling, vault, balance beam, and trampoline. We offer classes designed to meet each child on his or her individual level. Gymnastics instruction is provided by our trained teaching staff and focuses on teaching the basic body positions and foundation skills of the beginning levels, to the more challenging and difficult skills of the more advanced levels. Gymnasts should wear leotards or athletic shorts and a t-shirt. No socks or jewelry. Gymnasts with long hair should tie it back.

Level 1 recreational classes are 1 hour and 10 minutes in duration. This class is designed as an orientation/introduction to gymnastics. The kids learn how to perform basic gymnastics skills and body shapes (tuck, pike, straddle, hollow, arch, straight body) on each gymnastics apparatus. For girls, that includes vault, bars beam, and floor. Additionally Level 1 students will receive instruction on the trampoline and tumble trak, and in strength and flexibility activities to develop spacial orientation body control. Level 1 is intended to be one semester only.

Prep 2 is an extension of level 1 curriculum. Regardless of a child’s natural ability, students who have completed Level 1 are at least a full step ahead of a new student trying gymnastics for the very first time. The students build upon what was learned in their first 20 week session as a Level 1, and begin to refine existing skills and perform more complex gymnastics skills. We anticipate that students spend only 1 semester in the prep 2 class.

Fall Schedule

Level 2 recreational classes are for students who have completed both level 1 and prep 2. After two full semesters of instruction, we anticipate that Level 2 students have a good understanding of the basics and are capable of learning many new skills on each apparatus. One semester at level 2 should prepare the student for advancement to Prep 3.

Prep 3 classes are 1 hour and 30 minutes in length. Like all skilled activities, more time at the task improves performance. With an hour and a half, students are able to spend more time on each event and further develop their skills and their strength. Students are likely to spend at least one or two full semesters at this level. If you attend twice per week, students will advance much more quickly. The next step for Prep 3 students is the level 3 class
